You lucky blog reader! Every Thursday I will be posting a bonus post–a quote from a designer and my response to it. Feel free to chime in with your own thoughts in the comments.
“Good design is obvious. Great design is transparent.”
This quote from designer Joe Sparano is relevant because it captures the essential difference between artists and designers. As one of my professors recently put it, there is a difference between large ‘A’ artists (fine artists) and small ‘a’ artists (graphic designers). Fine artists make art as a means of personal expression. They are front and centre. Designers make art that is secondary to the purpose of the product. Form follows purpose and function. This quote reminds me that everything in my designs should be laser-focused on that purpose, so that the design itself seems to have grown organically out of the product.
